Tile Hill

The walk up Tile Hill from Carnforth is a proper little leg-stretcher that rewards you with views across Lancashire and into the Lake District on a clear day. It's not one of those granite monster peaks - more a solid limestone rise that takes the better part of an hour to bag from the valley below, depending on your fitness and how often you stop for breath.

What you get at the top is honest moorland scenery. No café, no visitor centre, no nonsense. Just moorland, sky, and enough distance to make the climb feel worthwhile without needing a full day's expedition. The terrain's straightforward enough for anyone with decent boots and a bit of determination, though it can get boggy after rain.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Philpin Farm is only three miles away and runs a tight ship with solid reviews - this works as a morning's outing before heading elsewhere. Ribblesdale Pods, slightly further at four miles, is more of a glamping operation if you're after something plusher. Either way, Tile Hill fits neatly into a wider Lake District fringe holiday.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a slog without much to see along the way to keep them entertained. Best visited in drier months when the paths aren't churned to mud. Worth doing once, absolutely - it's just not the sort of peak that'll haunt you if you miss it.
