Thurstonland Tunnel south portal

The south portal of Thurstonland Tunnel is one of those railway archaeology moments that stops you mid-walk. You're coming through the Pennine hills near Holmfirth when suddenly this Victorian brick archway emerges from the hillside - solid, purposeful, slightly defiant against the weather. Built in the 1850s as part of the Manchester to Leeds line, it's a proper bit of industrial heritage that most walkers bypass without a second glance.

What you're actually looking at is the entrance to a 1.2-mile tunnel that represented serious Victorian engineering ambition. The brickwork is immaculate despite its age, and there's something quite moving about standing in front of something that's been quietly doing its job for 170 years. You can't go inside (it's an active railway line), but the portal itself - the architectural statement of it - is worth the detour.

This works best if you're already hiking the local moorland trails rather than making a special trip. The nearby camping spots at Whitegate Leisure or Thurlmoor Farm make for a good base if you're spending time exploring the area. Holmfirth itself is only a few miles away, proper hub for the Pennines. Early morning or late afternoon light catches the brickwork beautifully, so time it right and you'll get decent photographs.

Walkers and railway enthusiasts will get most from this. Kids might manage five minutes unless they're genuinely into old trains and engineering. It's free, accessible from the public footpath, and takes roughly ten minutes to properly examine. Don't expect a visitor centre or facilities - just history, moorland, and one seriously well-built Victorian tunnel.
