The reservoir at Thrybergh sits like a proper inland sea on the edge of Rotherham, surrounded by woodland that makes you forget you're anywhere near a town. It's a working water supply, which means it's been maintained to a high standard for well over a century - the whole area has that sense of quiet purpose about it.

What you're really here for is the walking. The main circuit around the water takes about an hour at a leisurely pace, and it's genuinely pleasant - flat enough that families won't struggle, but with enough tree cover and water views to keep it interesting. The park has meadows and scrubland too, which means birdwatchers often spot something worth noting. Spring and autumn tend to be the best times; summer weekends can get a bit busy with local day-trippers.

Realistically, allow ninety minutes to two hours if you're doing the full loop without rushing.
