Three Pebble Slab

Standing stones might get all the glory, but this distinctive rock formation on the moors above Bakewell offers something rather more unusual. Three flat slabs of gritstone sit naturally arranged like giant stepping stones, creating a viewpoint that feels prehistoric yet entirely natural. The approach involves a fair bit of moorland tramping, but that's half the appeal. Come on a clear day and you'll see across the Derwent Valley towards Chatsworth's parkland in the distance.

It's completely free, naturally, and accessible year-round though the rocks can get properly slippery when wet. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from wherever you park up. Families staying at one of the nearby sites like North Lees Campsite or Derbyshire Hills Campsite will find it makes a decent half-day adventure, especially if you combine it with a poke around Bakewell afterwards. Just don't expect any facilities - this is raw Peak District at its most elemental.
