Thorpe Wood Nature Reserve

Walking into Thorpe Wood from the Peterborough side feels like stepping properly away from the city - which is exactly the point. This is a working woodland rather than a manicured nature trail, with mature trees creating the kind of dappled shade that makes even a humid Cambridgeshire afternoon bearable.

You'll find yourself on well-worn paths threading between oak and ash, with enough open glades to stop and actually spot something. Birdwatchers come here seriously - woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the usual suspects if you're patient. The forest floor shifts between dark earth and the occasional boggy patch, so decent shoes matter.

It's ideal if you're camping at Ferry Meadows or Nene Outdoors - both within a mile - and need a proper walk without driving anywhere. An hour or so is enough to feel like you've left civilisation without committing to a half-day expedition. Families with younger kids might find it a touch underwhelming after 45 minutes unless they're genuinely keen on spotting wildlife. Older children and serious walkers will appreciate the genuine woodland feel.

The reserve doesn't seem to charge, which is refreshing. Go early morning or late afternoon if you want to maximise your chances of seeing anything interesting. It's the sort of place that works best as part of a broader Peterborough trip rather than a destination in itself, but if you're based at one of the nearby parks, it's absolutely the walk to do.
