Cuckoos' Hollow

The water at Cuckoos' Hollow sits dark and still, ringed by trees that lean in as if keeping secrets. It's a small lake, nothing dramatic - you won't find yourself gasping at the sight of it - but that's rather the point. This is the kind of place where you notice things because there's space to actually look.

It's a proper spot for a slow walk. Families with younger kids will find the circuit manageable, though there's not a great deal to actually do once you've walked it - no play areas, no cafe, no facilities that I could see. Birdwatchers come here regularly, and on a quiet morning you'll understand why. The reeds and shallow edges attract waders and wildfowl. Bring binoculars if you're that way inclined.

You're just outside Peterborough, which helps with logistics. If you're camping at Ferry Meadows - the five-star Caravan and Motorhome Club site just down the road - Cuckoos' Hollow works well as a morning outing before you head to the main attractions. It won't eat up your whole day, which is fine. Sometimes a simple walk round a quiet lake is exactly what a holiday needs, especially if you've had your fill of busier spots.

Go early if you can. The afternoon tends to bring dog walkers and the moment is lost.
