Thornes Park

The wetland here is what draws you in first - a proper maze of reed beds and shallow pools that feel miles from anywhere, despite being just outside Wakefield. Thornes Park sits on the edge of the city but genuinely feels isolated in the best way possible. You'll spot water birds constantly - herons, egrets, grebes if you're lucky - and the paths wind through the reserve in a way that forces you to slow down and actually look around rather than march straight through.

It's excellent for families with older kids who can handle a steady walk without needing a playground at the end. Walkers will appreciate the loop routes that range from twenty minutes to well over an hour depending on which trails you take. The birdwatchers absolutely love it here, especially during migration seasons when the visiting species numbers spike considerably.

No entrance fee, which is brilliant. Allow anything from forty minutes to two hours depending on whether you're serious about the binoculars or just after a quick breath of air. Spring and autumn are peak times for spotting something interesting; summer can feel a bit quiet by comparison, though dragonflies make up for the bird numbers dropping off.

Stay at Broadlands Farm Touring Caravan Site just down the road - it's only a mile and a half away and genuinely top-rated - and you've got this nature reserve on your doorstep before breakfast. Nostell Priory Holiday Park is a bit further but adds another string to the bow if you're planning a longer stay around Wakefield.
