Thornbury Hill

The walk up Thornbury Hill near Horncastle feels almost cheeky after the flat Lincolnshire landscape that surrounds it. At 128 metres, it's hardly Alpine, but the views across the Wolds are genuinely worth the climb - on a clear day you can see for miles across rolling countryside that most visitors to this part of England completely miss.

The approach is straightforward enough: woodland paths lead to the summit, where you'll find yourself above the tree line with proper panoramas opening out in every direction. It's the kind of spot where walkers genuinely catch their breath, partly from exertion, partly from the unexpectedness of it all. On quieter days you might have the whole thing to yourself, which adds to the appeal.

Family groups with kids aged eight and up will find it manageable - the climb isn't brutal and there's real accomplishment at the top. History types will appreciate that you're standing on land that's been walked and worked for centuries, though there's no dramatic ruins or interpretive boards to explain it all. You need to bring your own sense of place.

Allow an hour for a decent circular walk, maybe longer if you're dawdling. It's free and you can turn up whenever suits you. The town of Horncastle itself has cafes and a decent high street if you need refuelling afterwards.
