South Thoresby Warren

The dunes and grassland at South Thoresby Warren stretch out in a way that feels properly remote for Lincolnshire. You're walking through acidic grassland and heathland that's genuinely scarce in this part of the country - the kind of habitat that takes real effort to maintain because left alone it would vanish under scrub and bramble. The reserve is run by the Wildlife Trust and covers about 90 hectares of what was once worked as a sand warren, which explains the undulating terrain.

Birdwatchers will spend half a day here and still feel they've missed something. Nightjars breed on the site - you'll want an early summer evening visit to catch them churring at dusk. The open ground is good for ground-nesting species too. Photographers come for the light across the dunes, especially in late afternoon when the shadows get interesting.

Walkers get decent paths through the reserve without it being manicured. Bring decent boots if there's been rain - the sandy soil doesn't drain as well as you'd think. The grassland areas are open and exposed, so wind can be a factor. Allow two to three hours if you're pottering about with binoculars; forty minutes if you're just doing a quick circuit.

It's a five-minute drive from Horncastle, making it a logical stop if you're based at one of the local holiday parks. Oxcombe Campsite and Lincolnshire Glamping are both close enough that you could slot this in as a morning before heading elsewhere. Realistically, it's more for the nature-focused visitor than families wanting a playground afternoon.
