Thoresby Vale Country Park

You'll find Thoresby Vale tucked away near Edwinstowe in the heart of Nottinghamshire's countryside - a proper nature reserve that rewards a quiet afternoon with genuine woodland peace. The park centres on a series of lakes and wetland areas where birdwatchers actually get results: kingfishers, great crested grebes, and if you're lucky, the occasional osprey on passage. There are walking paths threading through mixed woodland and around the water, nothing too strenuous, and the whole thing feels genuinely wild rather than manicured.

It's the kind of place that will eat up a morning if you've got binoculars and patience, but honestly it won't hold families with small kids for more than an hour or so - there's not much in the way of facilities or playgrounds.
