The centre itself gives you the context - Robin Hood mythology, the actual history of the forest as a royal hunting ground, and what's survived here over centuries. You'll find information about the trails, the Major Oak (the famous one everyone comes for), and the woodland itself.

It's worth an hour or so if you're into the backstory. Kids might find the exhibition engaging for 30 minutes, then they'll want to get outside and actually explore. Walkers and history types will spend longer here, reading properly instead of skimming. The staff can point you toward the best routes depending on what you've got time for.

From the centre, you're positioned perfectly for the forest itself - the walks radiate outward from here, and you can tackle anything from a gentle loop to something more ambitious. If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Center Parcs Sherwood Forest is just 2.2 miles away, or any of the Sherwood-specific parks within striking distance - this is where you'll naturally gravitate on your first morning. Clumber Park is also close by at 4.8 miles if you want to mix woodland visits across your week.
