Thompson Park

The moorland rolls out in front of you at Thompson Park, and you immediately understand why Rossendale folk guard this reserve like a secret. It's proper wild - not manicured, not fussed over, just good honest Lancashire countryside where heather grows thick and the views stretch toward the Pennines.

You're here to walk, mainly. The reserve sits on the slopes above Rossendale town, and the paths wind through heathland and rough grassland with enough elevation to feel like proper exercise without being punishing. On a clear day the visibility is excellent. The moorland attracts a decent population of red grouse and curlew, so birdwatchers will find it worth the trip, though you'll need binoculars and patience.

Family groups can manage the easier lower paths in an hour or so, but walkers who want a proper outing should allow two hours minimum. It's free to visit - no visitor centre, no cafe, just you and the moor. Go in late summer or autumn when the heather flowers and the light turns golden across the slopes.
