Thirlwall Castle

Thirlwall Castle sits on the Northumberland moorland like something from a half-remembered dream - walls still standing, still defiant after 700 years. It's a proper ruin, the kind where you can actually clamber about and get a proper feel for medieval life rather than just stare through a fence.

You're looking at a 14th-century stronghold that once guarded this stretch of the border against Scottish raids. The gatehouse is the real draw - climb up and you can see for miles across the Pennines. The rest is foundations and rubble mostly, but that's part of the appeal. It's raw, unmanicured, the sort of place walkers and history types find genuinely gripping.

There's no visitor centre or tea shop, which means it stays refreshingly free of crowds. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, more if you're into medieval fortifications and want to sketch out how it all worked. The ground can be muddy even days after rain, so proper footwear matters.

Haltwhistle is your base - about three miles away - and it's genuinely well-positioned. Hadrian's Wall Campsite is barely ten minutes' drive, and both Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Herding Hill Farm are close enough that you could spend a morning here, then head out to the Wall itself or towards Hexham. It fits naturally into a week exploring the wall's western reaches. Go early or late in the day when the light hits properly and you'll have the place almost to yourself.
