Herdley Wood sits just outside Haltwhistle, that market town on the edge of the Pennines, and it's the sort of place locals know and tourists miss entirely.

What you get is straightforward: woodland walking through mixed forest, the kind where you might hear more birdsong than people talking. No entrance fees, no ticket office, just access to trails that wind through old trees. It's not dramatic like some of the Lake District forests - there are no waterfalls or dramatic gorges - but that's rather the point. Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those who enjoy quiet forest rambles without the crowds. Kids under ten might find an hour sufficient unless they're proper woodland enthusiasts. The nearest parking areas aren't always obvious, so allow time to locate access points properly.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site is closest at under two miles, while Herding Hill Farm offers more upmarket glamping options a bit further out - Herdley Wood works as a low-key morning walk before tackling Hadrian's Wall itself. It's not the reason to come to Northumberland, but it's a solid addition to a park-based holiday if you want an hour away from the main attractions.
