Crow Wood

The forest floor at Crow Wood is thick with moss and last season's leaves, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a proper woodland walk near Haltwhistle, all conifers and open glades, the sort of spot where locals come to clear their heads rather than tick off a tourist list. The trails wind through without too much drama - nothing that'll exhaust you, but enough to feel like you've been somewhere.

Walkers will find this worthwhile. There's real forest atmosphere here, the kind you get when trees have been growing undisturbed for decades, and the paths are well-maintained enough that you won't spend the whole time watching your footing. Families with younger kids might manage an hour or so; teenagers will likely need more of a challenge. It's the sort of place where a decent camera is useful - dappled light through the canopy, proper woodland shots.

The beauty of Crow Wood is how it slots into a longer day. You're close enough to Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site that you could do this as a morning walk, then head out to Hadrian's Wall (the actual wall itself is nearby) in the afternoon. Or pair it with Herding Hill Farm's glamping if you want something more comfortable - three quality spots within a few miles of each other.

There's no faffing about with opening hours or admission fees that we can find, so just go when you fancy. Early morning, you'll have it practically to yourself.
