Thirdgill Head Man

Getting to Thirdgill Head Man means a proper fell walk from Cockermouth way, and you'll know about it once you're up there. This is a modest peak that rewards walkers with genuine fell country rather than the honeypot routes everyone else tackles. The summit itself sits just shy of 600 metres, offering views across the northern fells toward the Lake District proper - nothing jaw-dropping from the top, but the walk in through the gullies and across the moorland is where the day earns its keep.

You're looking at a couple of hours minimum for a decent circuit, longer if you faff about or the legs are tired. Serious hikers will appreciate how uncluttered it is up here - you won't queue for a photo or dodge crowds. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of bog and broken ground will do fine, though little ones will probably grumble about the sustained gradient. Summer's the obvious choice, though spring gives you better visibility without the midges.
