Third Hill

The walk up Third Hill rewards you with views across Perth and far beyond - assuming the weather cooperates, which in Perthshire is never guaranteed. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain, the sort of thing you can knock off in an afternoon without needing specialist kit or a dawn start.

From the summit you get a real sense of where Perth sits in the landscape, with the River Tay winding through below and the highlands proper rising away to the north. On a clear day it's well worth the effort. On a murky one, you might find yourself wondering why you bothered. The walk itself is straightforward enough for most fitness levels, though it's steep enough in places to make you work for it.

Historically-minded visitors will appreciate that you're looking out over one of Scotland's most important medieval towns. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a slog with nothing much to hold their attention on the way up.

If you're staying at Greenhill Farm Glamping just down the road, Third Hill makes a good morning excursion before heading into Perth proper. Alternatively, base yourself at one of the other farms scattered within a few miles - Gallowhill Caravan Park or Fossoway Cabins both put you close enough for an easy drive and park walk. Allow a couple of hours return trip, more if you're moving slowly or stopping for photos. Free to access, obviously. Go when the forecast actually shows some visibility.
