The Word, National Centre for the Written Word

They do everything from contemporary author showcases to exhibitions on medieval manuscripts. The cafe is decent enough for a lunch break, and the gift shop has actual thoughtful picks rather than tourist tat.

This works best for book lovers, writers, and anyone who gets genuinely interested in how words and stories shape culture. Kids under ten might struggle with the pace, though they often run family-friendly events during school holidays. Adults will happily spend two to three hours here without feeling rushed.

It's free to enter, though donations are encouraged and special exhibitions sometimes charge. The location is your real bonus - you're right on the coast with proper sea views and a decent stretch of beach to walk off afterwards.
