The Winkfield

The Winkfield is a proper countryside picnic spot on the edge of Bracknell Forest, close enough to Windsor that you could easily combine it with a day exploring the royal town. It's the sort of place where families actually want to stop - open grassland, trees for shade, and enough space that you won't be elbow-to-elbow with other visitors even on a summer weekend.

What you get here is straightforward: a pleasant outdoor space to spread a blanket, let the kids run about, and eat something without the chaos of a town centre. There's no fancy facilities or attractions, so manage expectations accordingly. This isn't a destination in itself, but rather a genuinely useful pit stop if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Cranbourne Hall is just over a mile away, making it ideal if you're based there and want somewhere to decompress between drives.

Historically it's been a grazing area rather than a manicured park, which is partly why it works so well. The landscape feels genuine rather than designed. Summer is obviously the best time, though it can get busy. Spring and autumn are often quieter and just as pleasant if the weather plays ball.

The main value is proximity and simplicity. Bring your own picnic, settle in for an hour or two, let everyone catch their breath. If you're after children's play equipment or tea rooms, look elsewhere. But if you want a no-fuss green space within touching distance of Windsor's attractions, this delivers. Worth the detour if you're already in the area.
