The Wilmington Yew

There's a yew tree in the churchyard at Wilmington, near Hailsham, that's been standing for something like 1,600 years. Walk into St Mary the Virgin churchyard and you'll find it - gnarled, hollow in places, impossibly thick at the base. It's the sort of thing that stops you mid-stride.

You don't do much here beyond look at it, really. Stand near it, walk round it, maybe sit on the bench if the weather's kind. The tree itself is the attraction - no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just an ancient thing that was already old when the Normans showed up. The churchyard is properly maintained, and the church itself is worth a peek if it's open, but the yew is why you've come.

It appeals to anyone who finds real age compelling. Not the tourist-brochure version of history, but actual time rendered in wood and bark. Families with older children will get it; younger kids might lose interest after ten minutes unless they're already into that sort of thing. Walkers often build it into a route - Hailsham's close enough for a morning visit if you're staying at Warren Wood Country Park or Golden Cross Holiday Park nearby.

Free, obviously. No opening hours to speak of - it's a churchyard, so accessible during daylight. Give yourself twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're lingering. Go when the light's low and sideways; you'll see the texture of the bark far better.
