The Willows (Woodland)

The Willows is a proper woodland site near Oakham that rewards a quiet wander if you're in the area. It's the kind of place where you'll find mature willows doing what willows do best - drooping gracefully over whatever water runs through here, creating those cathedral-like tunnels of green that make you actually want to switch your phone off.

It's not a destination you'd drive two hours for, but if you're staying at Emily's Cut Camping nearby, it's absolutely worth an afternoon explore. Woodland walkers will get something genuine from it - the space has character, the sort of undisturbed quality you notice when there aren't benches and interpretation boards everywhere. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are sensible.

The real question is how long you'll want to spend there. Most people cover the main paths in 45 minutes to an hour, which is plenty. Families with young kids might find it a bit too quiet and featureless - there's no playground, no obvious "stuff to do". But if you're after somewhere to decompress between other Leicestershire activities, or you've got teenagers who appreciate a walk that doesn't feel forced, this delivers.

Go in spring or early summer when the willows are full and the woodland floor isn't a swamp. Winter's fine too if you like that sparse, skeletal look. It costs nothing and demands nothing of you - which, honestly, is becoming rather rare.
