The Whittox Gallery

The space itself is intimate, the kind of place where you can actually breathe between pieces rather than shuffling through crowds. Most people spend forty minutes to an hour here, which feels about right without feeling rushed.

This works brilliantly if you're the sort of traveller who gets fidgety in big museums but appreciates seeing what local and regional artists are actually making. Art students and creative types will find it worthwhile; families with young kids probably won't - unless your children are genuinely into galleries, in which case the smaller scale is actually less overwhelming.

Based near Warminster, it slots nicely into a broader Somerset holiday if you're stopping at one of the area's numerous caravan parks - Longleat's just 4.8 miles away if you fancy mixing high-street attractions with something quieter. Center Parcs Longleat Forest is similarly close at 5.1 miles, making this a good afternoon detour between bigger plans.

Before you go, ring ahead or check their social media - opening hours and admission fees aren't widely advertised online, which is typical of smaller independent galleries. Worth the effort though.
