High Wood

Dense woodland stretches across the rolling hills just outside Warminster, offering proper countryside walking without the crowds you'll find at more famous spots. High Wood is working forest - expect to hear chainsaws in the distance and see timber stacks, but that's part of its charm. The paths can be muddy even in summer, so come prepared with decent boots.

Families will find it a good hour's ramble, though toddlers might struggle with some of the steeper sections through the trees. Dog walkers absolutely love it here - plenty of space to let them off the lead away from traffic. The views aren't spectacular, but there's something satisfying about emerging from thick canopy into sudden clearings.

What makes this spot work brilliantly for a Longleat area holiday is its complete contrast to the safari park crowds. After a day of lions and gift shops, the quiet forest feels like a different world entirely. Center Parcs Longleat Forest sits just down the road, making High Wood perfect for guests wanting to explore beyond the resort boundaries. Allow two hours for a proper walk, less if you've got small children in tow. Free access as far as I could tell, though parking might be limited along the lanes.
