The Watermill

A working watermill in the heart of Aberfeldy that still grinds grain the old-fashioned way - you'll actually see the massive wheel turning if the water's flowing properly. It's a proper piece of industrial heritage, the sort of place that makes you understand why mills were the backbone of rural Scotland for centuries.

Inside, there's enough mechanical detail to keep engineering types fascinated for a good hour. The exhibits explain the milling process from grain to flour, and if you're lucky the staff will be actively producing - watching tonnes of stone wheels do their job never gets dull. Kids aged eight upwards will find it genuinely interesting; younger ones might lose patience after twenty minutes or so.

The setting on the River Tay is lovely, and the mill itself is compact enough that you won't feel rushed. Admission details aren't fully clear online, but it's open daily 10am to 4:30pm, so ring ahead if you're making a special trip. Allow ninety minutes maximum, including a browse of the small gift shop.

If you're basing yourselves at one of the nearby caravan parks - Aberfeldy Caravan Park is just up the road, or Grandtully Station if you fancy something more rural - this works well as a rainy-day activity or a half-day outing when the weather's dodgy. It won't blow your mind, but it's solid local history without the tourist crowds you'd get elsewhere.
