The Wallington Gallery

The National Trust's Wallington house sits south-west of Newcastle, and its gallery space is genuinely worth a detour if you're spending time in Northumberland. You're walking through a proper country house with serious bones - built in the 1680s - and the collection ranges from oils to sculpture, mostly British and spanning several centuries. Nothing's trying too hard here. It's the sort of place where you'll stumble on something unexpected in a side room and actually stop.

Historians and art types will spend a good couple of hours poking about. Families with restless kids might find themselves herding rather than enjoying after the first hour, though there's enough space to spread out. The surrounding grounds are excellent for burning off energy afterwards.

It's free entry if you're a National Trust member, otherwise there's a small charge. Allow two to three hours if you're taking it seriously. Summer visits are fine but quieter winter weekends often mean you get the rooms almost to yourself, which changes the whole experience.
