The Village Green

The Village Green in Conwy is one of those places that sneaks up on you - easy to walk straight past if you're not paying attention, but genuinely worth a proper look around. It's a nature reserve that feels far less formal than the name suggests, with rough grassland, scattered trees, and the sort of meandering paths where you might actually spot something interesting if you're quiet enough.

What makes it work is the lack of fuss. No visitor centre, no entrance fees ringing about, just a proper piece of Welsh countryside that happens to be protected. Birdwatchers get the most out of it - you'll see warblers in spring, finches most of the year, and if you're lucky, something rarer passing through. Families with young kids might find twenty minutes is about the limit unless they're the type who enjoy spotting insects and turning over logs, but for a gentle morning walk before heading into Betws-y-Coed, it's solid.

Allow an hour if you want to do it justice rather than rush it. Spring and early summer are best when the place is actually alive with bird song. If you're basing yourself at Conwy Valley Touring Park - just a five-minute walk away - this makes a natural warm-up before tackling the bigger walks around Snowdonia. It's the sort of spot that reminds you nature doesn't need to be spectacular to be worth your time.
