The Standing Toby's Rock

A hulking slab of granite stands alone on the Aberdeenshire moorland, weathered to a shade somewhere between rust and charcoal. Standing Toby's Rock isn't dramatic or impossibly tall, but it commands attention in that quiet way old things do. Legend has it a giant called Toby hurled the thing here, though honestly the geology tells a better story than the mythology ever could.

It's the kind of spot that appeals to walkers more than casual tourists. You'll need a proper hike to reach it - not treacherous, but genuine effort - so half a day should cover the walk and time stood around wondering what made it worth the trip. Local hikers seem to make a pilgrimage of it, which says something about the landscape out here.

Arbroath is your nearest town, though it's a fair distance away. If you're staying at The Grange Glamping just down the road, this makes sense as a morning expedition before heading back for lunch. The Highland scenery around it is the real draw - wide, open moorland that stretches properly far. On a clear day it's worth the walk. On a murky one, less so.

Free to visit, obviously. No visitor centre, no cafe, no gift shop to soften the edges. Just the rock, the wind, and the feeling you've seen something that doesn't care whether tourists show up or not.
