You'll find yourself walking through five acres of proper mature gardens just outside Arbroath, where the rhododendrons alone make the trip worthwhile if you time it right. Pitmuies Gardens has that slightly overgrown, romantic feel - the kind of place where you wander off the main path and discover hidden corners that weren't on the map. There's a walled garden, woodland walks, and enough greenery to keep botanists happy for a good couple of hours, though most visitors spend about ninety minutes here without feeling rushed.

It's best for anyone who actually enjoys plants rather than theme park thrills. Families with young children might find it a bit slow unless the kids are already keen on the outdoors. The woodland paths are manageable but muddy after rain, so proper shoes matter.

If you're staying at The Grange Glamping or Greenhillock Glamping nearby - both excellent spots - Pitmuies fills a morning well without eating up your whole day. You could easily combine it with a walk along the Arbroath coast or a visit to the town's abbey. The gardens themselves are free to wander, which is a genuine bonus. Spring and early summer are obviously the winners for colour and life, but autumn has its own appeal if you like moody skies and golden light through the trees. Go mid-week if you can - weekends bring more crowds and it loses some of its peaceful charm.
