The Slang

The Slang is a proper woodland walk just outside Shrewsbury, the kind of place where you can lose an hour without trying. It's not dramatic or sweeping - just dense forest with good paths that wind through the trees and occasional clearings where light spills through. You won't find themed attractions or visitor facilities here, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you came for.

This is squarely for walkers who want fresh air and a bit of peace rather than views or photo opportunities. Kids will enjoy it if they're the exploring type - scrambling over tree roots, spotting wildlife - but there's not much to hold a five-year-old's attention beyond 45 minutes. The woodland is genuinely quiet though, which feels rare so close to town.

If you're based at Love2Stay or one of the other caravan sites within a few miles of Shrewsbury, The Slang makes a decent morning outing before heading elsewhere. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's free, it's accessible, and it does what it says on the tin. Expect muddy boots and damp undergrowth rather than manicured trails. Winter can be boggy so wear proper footwear. Best in spring or autumn when the woodland actually feels like something rather than just grey trees.
