The Serpent Coppice

The Serpent Coppice is a proper woodland walk just outside Ludlow, and it's the sort of place that rewards a lazy afternoon more than it demands a full expedition. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, ancient oaks tower overhead, and there's genuine quiet here - the kind you don't get in most of Herefordshire's busier spots.

What you're actually walking through is a managed woodland with a history stretching back centuries. Coppicing - the practice of cutting trees to encourage regrowth - has shaped this landscape for generations, and you can still see the evidence in the way the woodland sits and breathes. There are proper paths rather than scrambles, which makes it accessible for families with younger legs, though older kids will likely find it a touch dull if they're after dramatic views or adventure park thrills.

The walk itself takes between 45 minutes and two hours depending on how many false turnings you take and how often you stop to examine fungi or listen for woodpeckers. Spring and autumn are best - winter can feel a bit sodden, and summer brings the midges out in force. It's free to access, which is the only way a woodland walk should be.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Orchard Holiday Park is closest at just over five miles away - this makes a decent morning sortie before heading into Ludlow proper for lunch. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a broader Herefordshire ramble, it's well worth the detour.
