The Seat

The Seat rises sharply from the landscape just south of Biggar, a modest but commanding peak that rewards the short walk to its summit. It's not a lung-busting climb - more of a brisk hill walk that takes the best part of an hour to reach the top - but it gives you proper 360-degree views across South Lanarkshire. On a clear day you can pick out the Pentlands to the north and the Southern Uplands rolling away to the south. The actual summit is bare moorland, which means wind can bite, so bring a windproof even when it looks calm down below.

This works best for walkers who want something achievable without needing a full day or specialist kit. Kids aged eight upwards will manage it without too much complaint, though the terrain is rough underfoot in places. Families might find an hour at the top enough before the novelty wears off, but for anyone who just wants to tick a hill and see some distance, it's well worth the effort.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the peak itself - bring water and something to eat. Access is free, and you can reach the start from Biggar without much fuss.
