The Sacred Heart

The Sacred Heart sits on the outskirts of Pulborough, a proper Victorian church that catches you off guard with its red brick solidity and surprisingly grand interior. Step inside and the whole atmosphere shifts - high ceilings, decent stained glass, that particular smell of old hymn books and polish that feels authentically lived-in rather than museum-like. It's the kind of place where you can actually sit for a few minutes without feeling rushed.

This isn't a major spectacle, so manage expectations accordingly. You're not looking at medieval stonework or architectural fireworks. What you get instead is a genuine community church that works well if you're already walking around Pulborough or breaking a longer countryside ramble. History buffs will find it moderately interesting; kids will get restless after ten minutes unless they're genuinely into ecclesiastical architecture, which, let's face it, most aren't.

Getting here from the glamping sites works a treat - Wakestone & Wild is barely two miles away, so it's an easy afternoon jaunt, and Graffham Camping is only three miles further if you're based there. The walk into Pulborough itself is pleasant enough, with decent paths and decent views across the Weald. Free to enter as far as most country churches go, though it's worth checking opening times before you trek over.

Pair it with a proper walk around the South Downs Way nearby rather than making it the centrepiece of a day out. It's worthwhile if you're in the area, not essential if you're planning a trip around it.
