Champs Hill

The South Downs around Pulborough offer proper walking country, and Champs Hill stands out as one of the area's most rewarding viewpoints. It's a straightforward hilltop walk - nothing too demanding, but the elevation gives you sight lines that stretch across the Weald toward the coast on a clear day. The summit itself is bare chalk downland, windswept and open, with that particular Sussex light that makes everything feel fresher than it probably is.

What makes it worth the effort is the walk itself rather than any facilities at the top - there are none, so come prepared. Most people allow an hour to reach the summit from Pulborough, though that depends entirely on your pace and whether you stop to catch your breath (I did, twice). The ridge path that connects to nearby hills means you can string together a decent afternoon loop if you're not in a rush.

It suits walkers more than families with young children - the paths are clear but involve genuine climbing. History enthusiasts might appreciate the Bronze Age barrow on the summit, though it's not exactly dramatic once you spot it. If you're staying at South Downs Caravan Park nearby, this makes an easy half-day excursion. Spring and autumn are best - summer crowds the better-known Sussex peaks, while winter mud can be tiresome.

Free, naturally. Go early if you want the hill to yourself, or save it for an afternoon when you've already tackled the busier attractions.
