The Rye

The Rye is a proper slice of riverside peace just outside Marlow - a nature reserve where the Thames loops round and the bank becomes a magnet for walkers and wildlife spotters. You're looking at open grassland dotted with wildflowers, mature trees offering genuine shade, and if you time it right, kingfishers darting through the reeds. The reserve is free to access and open year-round, though spring and early summer are when you'll see the most life. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a circuit walk; half an hour if you just want to stretch your legs and watch the river traffic. Winter can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are wise.

It's a natural fit with the camping and glamping options scattered within a few miles - Penn Meadow Farm is only three miles away, and most of the others within easy striking distance. After a night under canvas, the riverside walk clears your head properly. Combine it with a wander into Marlow town itself for proper coffee and lunch.
