The Ruskin Museum

The Ruskin Museum in Coniston sits in a converted Victorian building, dedicated to the life and work of John Ruskin, the art critic and social reformer who fell head-over-heels for the Lake District. You'll find his personal collection here - drawings, manuscripts, photographs - plus bits and pieces that reveal how he actually lived: his teapot, his desk, that sort of thing. It's small, intimate, and refreshingly un-bombastic about its subject.

For most people, two hours is plenty. Art historians and Ruskin enthusiasts will linger longer, picking over the correspondence and sketches. Kids under twelve will probably get fidgety unless they're already into Victorian stuff. The building itself matters as much as the contents - all narrow corridors and period rooms that feel lived-in rather than sterile.

Coniston village sits about a mile from the museum, so you won't need a car to get there from town. It's well-positioned if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Skelwith Fold or Low Wray are close enough for a morning visit without eating a whole day. Great Langdale Campsite works too if you're planning fellwalking; the museum pairs nicely with a stroll up to Tarn Hows or along the eastern shore of Coniston Water.

Check opening hours before you go - museum hours are unpredictable in the shoulder seasons. Admission costs a few quid, which feels fair given the personal nature of the place.
