The Royal St. George's Golf Club

Royal St. George's sits on the Kent coast near Sandwich, one of England's most exclusive golf clubs and a place most of us will only ever walk past, not play. The course itself is private and fiercely so - this isn't somewhere you just rock up for a round unless you're a member or invited by one. What you can do is walk the perimeter on public footpaths and see why it's held the Open Championship five times. The links-style layout and firm greens make it brutally difficult even for professionals, which is precisely why it's revered.

Golf obsessives will get a proper kick out of seeing the course in person, especially if you're into Open history - the drama here is real. Non-golfers? Honestly, it's less interesting. You're looking at a golf course from the outside, which is fine for ten minutes but won't fill an afternoon. The walk itself around Sandwich is pleasant enough, though.

If you're staying at Sandwich Leisure Holiday Park just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch to swing by and take a photo at the gates. The coastal footpaths nearby offer better views and more entertainment value. Kingsdown Camping and The Foxhunter Park are within reasonable striking distance too if you're basing yourself in the area. Worth a detour if golf means something to you. Skip it if you're after something to actually do rather than look at.
