The Rough

The Rough is a proper woodland in Shropshire, just outside Bridgnorth, where you can lose yourself among dense trees and winding paths without needing a map or a purpose. It's the kind of place where the canopy gets genuinely thick - you'll notice how much darker it feels under those branches, how the sound changes. The paths meander through it reasonably well, though you won't find any obvious signage or facilities, so this is walking for people who like a bit of navigation rather than a well-groomed stroll.

It works well for families with kids old enough to enjoy a proper woodland ramble - nothing too technical, just plenty of natural features to keep them interested. Photographers often find something worth shooting here, especially when light filters through in the right way. The woods aren't huge, so you're looking at maybe an hour or two depending on how much you want to explore, not an all-day commitment.

The best time is probably autumn when the floor cover changes colour, though it's never going to disappoint.
