The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre

The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre sits in Great Missenden, just outside Tring, and it's basically a shrine to one of Britain's most brilliant children's authors. You get to walk through Dahl's actual writing hut - a proper small wooden studio where he dreamed up the BFG, Matilda and all the rest - and there are original manuscripts, illustrations and personal belongings scattered throughout. The whole place feels lived-in rather than sterile, which matters when you're looking at someone's life work.

Kids absolutely love it, especially if they've read the books. There's enough interactivity to keep under-tens engaged for a good two hours, though older children might find themselves racing through in less time. Adults who grew up with Dahl will get more from lingering over the handwritten pages and photos - you can see how his stories actually came together. The museum isn't enormous, so don't expect to lose a full day here.
