The quay St Ives

The waterfront at St Ives feels smaller than you'd expect for a place that's been trading since medieval times. It's a proper working quay along the Great Ouse - fishing boats, narrow footpaths, Georgian townhouses looming over the water. You won't find much in terms of attractions here; this is about atmosphere rather than activities.

What draws people is the walk itself. The bridge dating back to the 15th century is genuinely impressive when you're standing on it, looking downstream toward Huntingdon. On a decent day the light catches the water nicely, and locals actually use the riverside paths rather than just tourists shuffling through.

Historically inclined visitors will appreciate the layers - medieval market town foundations, then Georgian expansion when the wool trade was booming. But if you're after interactive museums or children's activities, you'll want Huntingdon instead, which is just a short drive north.

Allow an hour for a proper poke around, maybe ninety minutes if you grab a coffee and sit by the water. The main draw for campers staying at Cuckoo Fen, Long Island Lake, or Roseberry Tourist Park is the gentle riverside walk and a change of scene from the holiday park routine. It's free to access and there's limited parking near the quay itself, so come early or prepare to walk from town.

Not a day-trip destination in itself, but a worthwhile detour if you're already in the area.
