The Potterings

You won't find The Potterings marked on many maps, but this oddity just outside Aylesbury is worth knowing about if you're camping in the area. It's basically a series of clay pits and earthworks left behind from centuries of pottery production - the sort of industrial archaeology that makes sense once you're standing in it, but requires a bit of imagination beforehand.

What you're actually looking at are sunken lanes and water-filled hollows where clay was extracted over generations. The landscape tells the story more than any signpost could. It's a proper walker's spot rather than a destination where you'd spend three hours. Most people give it 30 to 45 minutes, meandering around the paths and trying to work out what was happening here in the 1600s and 1700s.

Historically minded visitors will find it genuinely interesting - this is tangible evidence of Buckinghamshire's pottery heritage, not just words in a guidebook. Kids might find it a bit dull unless they're already keen on how things used to be made. If you're staying at Orchard View Farm Camping & Glamping or Hill Farm Camping just down the road, it makes a decent morning walk to break up the day.

No entrance fee, no facilities to speak of, and no fixed hours because it's landscape rather than a managed site. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged - after heavy rain those sunken lanes turn into proper mudholes. Best visited as part of a broader Aylesbury area walk rather than as a standalone trip.
