The Pinnacle

The keep at Clitheroe Castle - that's what locals call the Pinnacle, a hefty Norman tower that's been standing guard over the market town since around 1186. It's small but proper imposing: just 40 feet of red sandstone rising above the castle grounds, with walls thick enough to make you wonder how they managed it without power tools. You can't get inside the keep itself these days, but the castle grounds are free to wander and the views across Ribble Valley from up there are genuinely worth the short climb. On a clear day you can see right across towards Pendle Hill.

Historians and castle enthusiasts will find it worthwhile - there's enough here to piece together the story of medieval Lancashire. Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin on the ground though; half an hour and you've covered it. The climb itself isn't steep, but it's exposed, so weather matters. Visit midweek if you can dodge the crowds from Clitheroe town centre.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Pendle View Holiday Park - both within easy reach - the castle works perfectly as a morning outing before heading into town for lunch. Combine it with a walk through the castle grounds proper and you've got a decent couple of hours sorted. The heritage site keeps irregular hours, so ring ahead or check the website before you go.
