Clitheroe Castle Museum

The castle itself is the real draw here - a Norman keep that's been standing since 1186, planted right on a hill above Clitheroe town centre. You can't miss it. The museum sits inside, filling you in on what's happened in this corner of Lancashire over the past nine centuries, which honestly makes the whole visit feel purposeful rather than rushed.

What you're looking at is a proper fortress, not some softened-up stately home. The keep is squat and powerful, built by the de Lacy family when they actually expected trouble. Inside, the exhibits cover the castle's military days, the Civil War siege (it didn't go well for the defenders), and the long years when it was basically just a useful ruin that locals probably ignored. The views from the top are genuinely worth the climb - you get the whole Ribble Valley spread out, and on clear days you can see the Pendle Hill ridge that dominates this part of the world.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're chatty with the staff. Families with kids aged six upwards will get something from it; younger ones might find the climb tedious. It's free entry, which is generous, and the castle grounds are open year-round.
