The Painted Room

You'll find this tucked away in Oxford itself - a medieval room that's genuinely worth seeking out if you're into the bones of history. The Painted Room is exactly what it sounds: a 13th-century chamber covered in original wall paintings, the sort of thing that makes you realise how much colour and decoration ordinary medieval buildings actually had. Most people think medieval interiors were all grey stone and grim. This one proves otherwise.

It's run by the Oxford Preservation Trust, which means it's looked after properly. The paintings are faded but still striking - geometric patterns, traces of what was once vibrant imagery. You're essentially standing in someone's medieval home, which is a proper privilege. Not enormous, so don't expect to spend hours here, but it's the sort of place that sticks with you.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from a visit. School groups doing medieval projects would find it invaluable too. It's free admission, which is generous given how rare surviving medieval wall paintings are in England.

If you're camping at Cedar Hollow Oxford or Valley Farm Campsite just outside the city, this is an easy addition to an Oxford day trip. Combine it with the colleges and the Ashmolean if you're doing a proper cultural sweep. Check the Trust's website for current opening hours before you go - they can be limited - but when it's open, it's absolutely worth the visit.
