Oxford Botanic Garden

The Botanic Garden sits right on the Cherwell's edge in Oxford, and it's genuinely one of those places that rewards a slow wander. Established in 1621, it's the oldest botanic garden in Britain - that's not just a line, it matters because you can feel the weight of centuries in how the place is laid out and maintained.

You get three main areas: the walled garden with its formal beds and glasshouses, the riverside meadow which is brilliant for a proper sit-down with a view, and the newer sections where they're growing more experimental stuff. The glasshouses alone are worth an hour if you like ferns and tropical plants. The walled garden is compact but densely planted - there's something in flower almost year-round if you pick your timing right. Summer's when it's fullest and most vibrant, but spring has its own charm.

This is genuinely brilliant for anyone who enjoys plants without needing it to be a full day out. Families with children tend to find it a bit quiet - there's not much to do beyond looking - but keen gardeners will linger. Allow two to three hours maximum, less if you're just after a riverside stroll.

It's free to wander the riverside areas, though the walled garden and glasshouses have a small entry fee.
