The Old School Whitton

The Old School in Whitton is exactly what it says on the tin - a proper Victorian schoolhouse that's been left largely to its own devices in the Powys countryside, just outside Presteigne. It's the kind of place that rewards a quiet wander and a bit of imagination: you can peer through the windows at desks still arranged in rows, and there's something genuinely moving about seeing a working classroom frozen in time.

This isn't a museum with plaques and timed entry slots. It's more of a roadside landmark that local history types and photographers seem to stumble across, drawn by its architectural bones and the particular melancholy of an abandoned Victorian school. The building sits in a rural setting, so you're really just taking a good look from outside and poking around the grounds - allow twenty minutes, half an hour if you're keen on photographing it.

Families won't get much from it beyond the novelty factor, and kids will lose interest quickly. But if you're already staying at one of the lovely spots nearby - Rockbridge Park or Hush Hush Glamping are both excellent bases - it's well worth the short drive as part of a broader explore of Presteigne and the surrounding villages. The area's proper quiet, which is rather the point. Check ahead locally about access; these abandoned buildings can be temperamental about visiting.
