The Nymph Hay

The Nymph Hay is a proper woodland walk just outside Chippenham, the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a dense forest patch with decent paths running through - nothing massive, but enough to feel genuinely removed from the surrounding farmland.

The appeal here is straightforward: mature trees, quiet air, and the sort of dappled light that makes you forget there's a market town five minutes away. In spring the floor comes alive with bluebells. Autumn's even better, all copper and gold underfoot. The paths are manageable for families with older kids, though it's muddy after rain - proper muddy - so wellies aren't optional.

Walkers will get a solid thirty minutes here without rushing, maybe forty-five if you're the type to stop and listen. It's not a destination in itself, to be honest. There's no visitor centre, no sculptures, no reason to spend half your day here. But tacked on to a stay at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park just down the road, it's exactly the sort of easy leg-stretch that breaks up a caravan week nicely.

The woodland is free to access - no gates, no barriers. Go early if you want solitude, though honestly you're unlikely to meet crowds here anyway. Stick to the main paths, keep an eye on children near the tree roots, and you're fine. Works brilliantly for anyone wanting a quick nature hit without the fanfare.
