Moorshall Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination with facilities, Moorshall Copse sits just outside Chippenham in Wiltshire and delivers what you'd expect from a working forest - tall trees, decent paths, and genuine quiet. The canopy's thick enough that even on busy days you'll hear birdsong rather than traffic, which is something. The paths wind through mixed woodland, muddy in winter but manageable most of the year, and it's the sort of place where you can actually breathe without bumping into anyone else's holiday group.

This works best for walkers who want a proper stretch without needing a postcard view at the end. If your kids are the running-about type, they'll burn energy for a couple of hours. Don't come expecting play equipment or a visitor centre - there isn't one. History buffs won't find much to sink their teeth into either, but if you're after genuine woodland atmosphere rather than curated heritage, it's worth the detour.

Allow 90 minutes to two hours for a good loop. Chippenham's close enough for supplies, and if you're staying at The Moors Campsite or Plough Lane Caravan Site nearby, you're barely five minutes' drive away. Worth combining with a walk around Chippenham's town centre or a visit to nearby Castle Combe if you want to make a proper afternoon of it. Footwear matters here - decent boots beat trainers, especially after rain.
