Castle Combe - Water Lane

Water Lane cuts through Castle Combe like the village's beating heart - a narrow, tree-lined strip of cottages that tumbles downhill towards the old mill stream. You'll recognize it instantly if you've seen the place on film; this is where they shot most of the exterior scenes for Doctor Dolittle and Larkrise to Candleford, though honestly, that matters less once you're actually walking it.

The lane itself is the attraction. Stone walls crowd in on both sides, and the cottages - mostly honey-coloured Cotswold stone - lean slightly as if they've been holding onto the slope for three centuries. There's no museum, no gift shop, no entry fee. You simply wander, take photos, and imagine what village life actually looked like when the mill wheel was still turning.

Families with young legs will enjoy the downhill walk; it's only a handful of minutes from the market square. History enthusiasts get more from it than casual day-trippers - the medieval layout, the working mill, the sense of how a place was laid out when function mattered more than aesthetics. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour, longer if you stop to draw or photograph.

It's a proper bonus if you're camping nearby - The Moors Campsite and Roe Deer Fields are both within easy reach of Chippenham. Castle Combe itself is busy with coach tours in summer, so weekday mornings hit differently. Worth the short drive from either site, though not worth a dedicated trip unless you're already in North Wiltshire.
