The Nether Hill

The walk up Nether Hill isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the top. The summit sits near Kinghorn in East Lothian, and on a clear day the views across the Firth of Forth are properly impressive - you can see right across to Fife, which makes the climb feel justified.

What you're getting here is a straightforward hill walk rather than anything fancy. The peak itself is moorland and grass, nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. It's good for families with kids who are old enough to manage a decent incline without complaining constantly - probably primary school age and up. The views reward the effort more than the walk itself does, so go when the weather's on your side.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so bring water and decent boots. You're looking at maybe forty minutes to an hour up, half that coming down if you're not careful on the descent. It works brilliantly as a morning jaunt if you're based at Drummohr Camping & Glamping Site a few miles away - you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the whole day ahead of you.

Don't expect solitude or dramatic scenery, but if you want an uncomplicated hill walk with a genuine view as a pay-off, this does the job. It's the kind of place locals know works rather than somewhere you'd plan a special trip around, but that's not a criticism.
