Ravenscraig Castle

The ruins of Ravenscraig Castle sit right on the Fife coast near Kinghorn, and on a clear day the view across the Firth of Forth is absolutely worth the trip. Built in the 15th century, it's one of Scotland's earliest gun fortifications - you can still see the gun ports built into the stonework, which tells you something about how serious they were about defence back then.

What you get is a proper fortress ruin rather than a reconstructed tourist attraction. The main structure is recognisable enough - tower, walls, the bones of it all there - but it's not a place to spend hours picking through. Twenty minutes to half an hour is realistic, maybe longer if you're into medieval military architecture. The location itself is the draw: standing on the rocky promontory with the water below and that Firth view, you genuinely feel the strategic thinking that went into placing a castle here.

It's free to access and you can walk right up to it from the coast path. Families with walkers aged eight upwards will find it interesting; younger kids might get restless once they've clambered on the rocks. History types will appreciate the gun port detail and the role it played in Scotland's defence against English raids.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Kinghorn Harbour is the closest at just over three miles - this makes a decent half-morning outing before heading to the beach or into Kinghorn proper. It's not a major day out on its own, but combined with coastal walks and the holiday park facilities, it slots in nicely.
